So what are some good ideas for a workout without weights? They can be broken down into a few main categories:

1. Running or other forms of cardio

One the easiest things to do is to bring a pair of running shoes and some athletic clothing while you’re away from the gym and simply take a tour of wherever you’re currently stopped. Running around a new area can be an exciting way to see the area and you’ll see more than just walking. If you happen to be traveling with some room you can bring a bike and check out some of the local trails.

2. Boot camp exercises

Plan some classic boot camp exercises or use a pre-planned routine that you can do in a hotel room or confined space. There are many variations of exercises that can keep you building muscle and in shape no matter where you are. Push ups, dips, squats etc. or any variations can be used. Get creative and use objects around you to get fit

3. Sports and recreation equipment

It never hurts to bring a soccer ball, a Frisbee or a football around when you’re traveling. You can play on the beach, in a park or just about anywhere there’s some space. It’s a great team activity and easy way to meet new people. You’d be surprised at how much exercise you can get if you start really getting into it

4. Yoga and Stretching

Work on seeing your time away is a blessing not a curse to your workout routine. If you’ve been doing the same workout for a while, spending some time stretching or trying something new can be very beneficial from your health. If you usually lift weight, running might be a welcome change for your body and vice versa.

So next time you’re traveling or going away from your gym, get ready and be prepared. It’s an opportunity to workout without weights, not a setback. Use your time wisely and be prepared, you might find a weight free workout you like!

60’s Retro Mod Birthday Parties

I love Birthday Parties and everything that comes with them! I am going to start off by saying that I love nothing more than homemade decorations, reusable supplies and cost saving tips. Sure, I now own my own party supply company, but that was not always the way! To this day I shop for bargain basement deals and make my own decorations! I invite everyone to share their positive & unique party ideas and money saving tips. Lets make some memories!

60’s Retro – Invitations

Hippies, peace signs, lava lamps, pet rocks, mood rings, VW Bugs, tube tops, platform shoes . . . the 60’s and 70’s were funkadelic and groovy. With the return of all things retro, this theme is sure to be a huge hit at your next party!

Invitations: Use a large, rounded letters and bright psychedelic colours when making the party invitations to offer a 60’s feel. Use the smiley faces, peace symbols, mod flowers and tie dye designs that have made that era so popular and recognizable. Free clip art is readily available all over the web to make your own invitation paper. You can also visit your local craft store and purchase some retro feeling printed paper. Use wording like “Feelin’ Groovy”, “Lets Get Funky” and “Cool, Man” when constructing the wording of your invite. You can inform your guests about the party theme through the invitation and ask them to come dressed as the part. It can be as simple as wearing a headband, a tie dye t-shirt, some beads or a peace symbol drawn on their cheek.

60’s Retro – Decorations & Crafts

Decorations: Decorate the party area with plenty of balloons and streamers in neon colours like pink, orange and lime green. Hang bead curtains in all the doorways the party guests will pass through. Place colored light bulbs in all lamps and sockets. Using large banner paper and neon paints, construct poster that proclaim “Peace”, “Love not War” and “Power to the People.” Make cut outs of Smiley faces, Mod Flowers, Yin and Yang symbols and Peace Signs out of construction paper. Hang Christmas lights around the room. Make use of any bean bag chairs, flower pillows and 60’s memorabilia to decorate the room. To set the mood play some popular 60’s music from bands like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones. Add a real funky groove by Tie Dying 3 or 4 old bedsheets with bright neon colours. Use 1 as a groovy tablecover and the rest as some furniture throws.

Crafts: Friendship Bracelets – Visit your local craft store for some premade kits or just simply purchase a roll of bracelet cord leather, a pack of clasps and a bag of stringing beads. The guests can come up with their own pattern, or use letter beads to spell their name or spell “Best Friends”,” Friends Forever.” Tie Dying – A must have at any 60’s party! You could tie dye a t-shirt, a headband, canvass bag or even a pair of socks! Simple tie dying instructions can found easily on the web or even by visiting your local library. You can even purchase all in one kits that come with all supplies and detailed information. Pet Rocks – Make your very own Pet to take home and love. Find rocks that are round and have a smooth texture. Soak the rocks in a soapy bath of water and give them a good scrub. This can be done prior to the party to allow plenty of drying time. Decorate it! Choose a colour and paint your rock with a very thin layer. One dab should do it! When dry, glue on some googly eyes. With a black felt tipped marker you can draw on a smile and some eyebrows. You can stop now or be creative by adding some yarn hair or a mini pom pom tail! Let it dry and voila – you’ve got a new friend! Now its time to name him or her.

60’s Retro – Games & Menu Ideas

Games: Set up a retro game room with hula hoops, tidily winks, pick up sticks and twister. How fun is that! Have a 60’s Game Night! Perhaps set it up as an obstacle course and see who can get through it the fastest. Funky Dress Up – Before the party, gather a garbage bag full of clothes. Funny, old, retro clothes, bandanna’s, beads, hats shoes and accessories. The Hippier the better! Visit your local thrift shop, salvation army and the closets of family and friends. Gather the guests in a circle, play some 60’s music land pass around an item. Any item with a Funkadelic Feel will do! Whoever is holding the item when the music stops (your controlling the music) must reach in and pull out 1 article of clothing and put it on. Continue on until every girl has at least 4 items on. Its hilarious and not to mention a great photo opportunity.

Menu: Food in the Hippie Era was all about healthy eating – granola, grains and garden fruits and vegetables. Give it a modern twist by having bowls of trail mix and 12 grain sun chips for snacking. Fruit Trays and Vegetable Trays would also work great for this theme. A big fad during the 60’s and 70’s was fondue – both cheese and chocolate. Other food fads, although not as healthy were pigs in a blanket(cocktail wieners baked inside a flaky crust) and macaroni and cheese with a crushed potato chip crust. For beverages you must serve Coke in a can and Tang of course. You can make a Tang punch by simply adding a bottle of 7-up and frozen fruit for garnish. This era introduced the style of Buffet eating. Put out the food, plates & utensils and have everyone help themselves! For dessert serve a large round cake decorated as a Smiley Face or a Peace symbol. All you need is some food colouring to dye the icing and a steady hand to draw the smiley face or the the peace symbol. You can also give your cake a tie dyed look by dropping food coloring on it and then running a toothpick through it in a circular motion, giving it that tie effect. Righteous. Can you dig it?

Create a neat and spacious workplace

Admittedly, there are quite a few tips and techniques that you should master if you want to benefit from a successful sewing project. To successfully see your project to term, it is equally important to determine in advance if you plan on sewing by hand or with a machine, and then adopt the proper techniques for each type of sewing. For example, it is highly recommended to create a neat and relatively spacious workplace to finish your project with minimal hassle. If possible, try to invest in holders or boxes or your spare needles, pins, thread bobbins and the likes.

Seam finishes for hand stitches

Contrary to popular belief, there are quite a few finishing techniques that you can adopt if you’re sewing by hand. In fact, experienced sewers always recommend that you finish machine stitches by hand to bring a professional and highly-polished look to your project. This particular tip will ensure that your seams do not unravel with time while delivering a solid finish to your project.

Accessories and tools

If you’re using a machine to sew, it’s not a bad idea to look for a machine with a wider work surface that will accommodate all fabric sizes. In fact, some apparatuses even include separate extension tables for storage. If they can, sewers should also try to invest in a machine cover to protect it from dust and enhance its performance. When sewing by hand, you should preferably buy a thimble, especially if you’re working with tougher pieces of fabrics. Other must-have accessories including bobbins, scissors, spare needles and bobbin holders.

The best types of stitches

There are several types of stitches that you can adopt for a successful

  • Basting stitch: This temporary stitch is commonly used to hold together various cuts of fabrics. A sewing machine is often used to finish up the project. The basting stich is removed afterwards.
  • Securing stitch: One of the best seam finishes, the securing stitch prevents your work from unravelling while providing far more secure hems and edges. Small, invisible knots are created all across the hems to ensure that the project doesn’t fall apart. Securing stitches are recommended for all types of fabrics.
  • Blind hem stitch: While some machines do come with blind hem stitches, it is also possible to do this type of stitch by hand. Blind hems- like the name suggests- are ideal for hemming, cuffs and collars. They can be used on just about any type of fabric.
  • Backstitch: Perfect for denim, leather and other such fabric, the backstitch can be used for seam repairs or to prevent tougher fabrics from unravelling. When doing a backstitch, it is recommended to start from the right and sew towards the left side of the fabric.

Working with denim: The Essentials

Working with denim differs from working with regular fabrics because of the overall thickness of this fabric. From the proper sewing machines to laundry or even sewing tips, here are a few points to consider when working with denim.

Caring for denim

It would certainly be a shame to see all of your hard work go to waste because you didn’t take the time and effort to properly care for your denim. To extend the longevity of your denim clothes, it is recommended to turn the clothes inside out before adding them to the laundry. If you’re washing a pair of jeans, you might want to add a cup or half a cup of vinegar to your laundry soap to intensify the color. Since the color tends to run during washing, always be sure to wash denim separately from all of your other clothes.

Invest in the proper accessories

Thick denim does require bigger needles that can pierce through the fabric without snapping. It is important to bear in mind that denim can very easily dull your needle so be sure to always keep some spare ones in your storage box. If you’re working with heavy-duty denim, be sure to buy a size 100/16 needle. If you’re working with light and stretch denim, it’s preferable to go for a 75/11 needle. Beginners will be glad to learn that most stores do carry specialty needles that are exclusively designed for denim. These normally feature a far sharper and longer tip that can very easily pierce through the weaves of your fabric. In fact, this needle comes with a larger eye which makes it even easier for you to thread the needle. This can also be used to accommodate topstitching threads.

Get the right thread

The best type of thread for denim is polyester since it is extremely durable and does not fray with time. However, if you prefer to use cotton thread, you should preferably go for a polyester thread that has been wrapped in cotton. This will ensure that your thread does not break or unravel. For topstitching, it is advisable to use decorative thread. If you plan on sewing several layers of denim at the same time, don’t hesitate to use a roller presser foot to facilitate this task.

Sewing machines for denim

When working with denim, always try to invest in a heavy-duty machine to protect both the machine and the fabric. The recommended models are:

  • SINGER 20U109 Zig Zag Straight Reverse Industrial Sewing Machine: One of the most professional sewing apparatuses on the market, this heavy-duty machine can deliver a large variety of stitches including heavy-duty and zig zag. This apparatus comes complete with the motor and table. It costs between $900 and $1000.
  • Sailrite Heavy-Duty Ultrafeed® LSZ-1: Priced between $800 and $900, this sewing machine is ideal for denim because it comes with a Power Plus Balance Wheel that delivers twice as much power as a regular sewing machine. The presser foot is extra-wide and comes with a built-in piping tunnel.
  • Juki LU-1508NS Single Needle Unison Feed Lock Stitch Machine: This heavy-duty sewing machine costs between $2000 and $3000 and is idea for more experienced sewers who often work with denim and heavier fabrics. It comes with a variety of features that will help you benefit from more polished results. For example, it even includes a thread trimming system as well as an automatic needle threader. The needles are appropriately thick and large enough to penetrate thicker fabrics and even sew two different layers at the same time. It is ideal for both home and industrial use.

Creating the Perfect Sewing Area

Whether you have a sewing room or a small sewing table to work with, it is extremely important to properly organize your work area to ensure that you finish your project with minimal hassle. Having a messy work station often results in accidental cuts, lost needles and other such incidents that can hinder your sewing. The good news, however, is that it’s extremely easy to organize your sewing area in a way that will help you remain completely focused on your sewing, regardless of how small the work surface is. The one thing to remember is that neatness is the key: as long as you can see where all of your sewing instruments are, you can be sure that you won’t face any major issue as far as your workspace organization is concerned.

Pay attention to the lighting

If you’re a professional sewer with a heavy-duty machine, chances are that you’ll be doing quite a lot of sewing at night. Consequently, it is important to position your work table under a relatively bright source of light. Granted, most apparatuses do come with built-in LED lights, but it always pays off to have some extra light handy. Alternatively, you can also invest in a simple work lamp with a multi-positioning neck. This is quite handy when it comes to more precise work such as removing stitches or for embroidering.

Select a proper-sized table

Along with the size, you should also pay attention to the weight of the table, especially if you’re using a heavy-duty sewing machine. To avoid major accidents, make sure that your table does not wobble and can comfortably sustain the weight of your apparatus. The size is also a factor: a common mistake that beginners make is to match their machine’s measurements to the measurement of the table. However, you should also factor in some elbow room as well as some additional space to set your extra scraps of fabrics, sewing accessories and the likes.

Determine what equipment you will need

Before you set up your sewing room or table, it’s not a bad idea to make a list of all your accessories and equipment so you know how to properly organize yourself. For example, if you often download patterns or stitch designs off the internet, you will probably need to have you laptop or tablet nearby. Similarly, sewers might also want to set some space aside for their ironing board since ironing is often required during the sewing process. If you’re short on space, however, you can also purchase a tabletop ironing board instead of a full table. Some sewers like to have a main table for their sewing machine and a side table for all their accessories. Depending on the type of project that you’re working on, you might also require a cutting table. In this case, you should ensure that your table is accessible from all sides. An office chair is not a bad idea since it enables you to swiftly move from table to table.

Organize your materials

You can start off by placing every accessory that you’ll need on your work table and then decide what goes where. To keep things neat and tidy, don’t hesitate to ditch the traditional pin cushion for a magnetic cushion that will automatically gather any stray needle or thread. Professional sewers might also need to set up a mirror and a changing area for their clients. This can be done at the far end corner of yours sewing room to save up on space. Pay particular attention to how you store your fabrics: keep them out of direct sunlight and use ironing board or towel cadies to neatly hang them up.

The Best Cheap Sewing Machines

With a sewing machine, you can easily decorate your house or make your own clothes at virtually no cost at all. Ideal for people who are on a budget, these machines will help you copy your favorite catwalk look or earn some additional money by showcasing your sewing talent. With a sewing machine, you can even indulge in some quilting and embroidery. For example, sewing machines can be used to monogram your cushions, towels and other similar items. These machines also make excellent gifts to friends and families.

While budget-friendly machines may not have the same extensive features as expensive ones, they still deliver an excellent performance. Cheaper sewing machines also have a lower lifespan than more expensive ones, which is why you should take the time to have it professionally examined and maintained at least once every two years.
